Detailed Installation Instructions for Japanese/Chinese Windows XP

Japanese/Chinese Windows XP has a different internal structure than English Windows; it uses 2 bytes to represent one Japanese/Chinese character, as opposed to the normal way of using 1 byte to represent one English character.

So what you need to do is set up another account on your computer, and make that an English account, not Japanese/Chinese.

First, uninstall the Speak Easy Thai software from your Japanese/Chinese account, if you have already installed it. To do this, put the CD-ROM in your CD drive, and use My Computer or Windows Explorer to browse to the root directory of the CD; you will see a program called UninstallMLD.exe; double click that to run it. Press the Go button on the window that is displayed, then the Uninstall button.

When that us done, go to the Control Panel, User Accounts, and create a new user with any name, for example YANKEE. Make that user an administrator.

Log off or restart your computer and sign on as the new user.

Go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, and make this user US or UK English. You want to eliminate Japanese for this user. This will not affect the normal operation of your computer. There are 3 tabs shown: Regional Options, Languages, Advanced.

On the Regional Options tab, set the language to US or UK English. Set the location to anything you want, it doesn't matter.

On the Languages tab, press the Details button, and choose English US or whatever. Click OK.

In the Languages Used in Menus and Dialogs, choose English.

On the Advanced tab, in the section called Language for non-Unicode Programs, choose English (United States).

Click OK.

Put the CD in the CD-ROM drive and install Speak Easy Thai for that user account. It should now work OK.

When you start your computer, you will now be asked if you want to use the normal Japanese/Chinese account, or the English account. Choose the English account when you want to use Speak Easy Thai.
