I now have a working Vista test system. Although Speak Easy Thai worked fine on the pre-release versions of Vista, it has some problems on the version of Vista you can actually buy (or copy) now in the marketplace.

As usual, Microsoft changed some stuff after the last beta release and before production release, without telling us lowly developers.

Specifically, I have found the following problems:

The timer is not working in the test yourself sections. For some reason, Vista is killing the count down timer. I will have to investigate this further. This also affects the Tone Practice section, as I use a timer to speak the two words; the second one does not get spoken. Clicking on the speaker icon next to the word unfreezes the timer, which speaks the word, then the button activates and speaks the word again. Not terribly useful.

The grammar button won't invoke the Thai grammar book.

And one more: playing the background beat caused Speak Easy Thai to crash.

Sigh. These are all stupidities introduced by Vista.

I will work on these problems over the next few days, and hopefully have a working version soon.

I have also discovered that Microsoft removed the standard Windows Help program from Vista. This doesn't affect Speak Easy Thai, as there is no help file, but the other programs in the suite all use Windows Help. You have to manually download Windows Help from Microsoft. Why the hell they did that is beyond me.

Vista Service Pack 1 and 2 fixed these problems. Speak Easy Thai now works on Vista, as well as Windows 7.

You get the service packs by running Windows Update.
